The English Carpet that combines French creation and traditional English know-how.

When we established Hartley’s of Paris in 1995, we had little idea how successful our concept of French design flair combined with traditional English craftsmanship would be.

We soon gained a reputation across Europe in the design, production and installation of our signature flatweave stair runners, wool carpets and rugs which were both visually striking and durable.

As we grew, we extended our stock range considerably adding numerous colours and designs.

We also offered a bespoke design service, allowing us to create custom-made floor coverings for clients. This proved highly popular with designers, owners of exclusive hotels, restaurants, and boutiques as well as residential customers seeking something special.

We formed Hartley & Tissier in 2007 to make our concept more accessible to the United Kingdom and the world beyond.

Today, with our offices, warehouse and workshop based in Cheltenham and a select group of UK-based stockists, we can readily respond to worldwide demands for the supply of superb quality wool carpet.

Bespoke wool carpeting

Difficult to define yet instantly recognisable, the very best in French carpet design can skip effortlessly from metropolitan chic to rustic charm – the common factor being a timeless style.

Our designers work with three kinds of carpets: flatweave, with its characteristic striped and geometric pattern; woven pile, in which the pile yarn and backing are woven in one operation; and tufted, in which the yarn is inserted into a pre-woven backing. Each type brings its own challenges and qualities.

Whether you choose an existing design from our extensive stock collections or prefer a completely bespoke option, our design team is committed to achieving the result you have in mind.

Manufacture of our carpets is carried out in England by skilled craftspeople and technicians. While many ranges are made using traditional methods and weaving looms, we are equally adept at employing the latest production technology if the project requires it.

We always use the best materials. Our hard-wearing, flatweave carpets, for example, are made exclusively from heavyweight woollen yarn spun in Yorkshire, and we undertook extensive research to source the finest silk for our luxurious wool and silk carpets.

Quality is paramount. Our Production Director approves every dye colour before it is released to the weaving mill – even if the colour has been used before. And all flatweave carpets are hand-finished by skilled menders who correct any imperfections.

At our Paris Showroom you can view our latest products, order from our existing collections or commission a custom-made carpet. We also provide a guaranteed installation service.

StÉphanie tissier
design director

Stéphanie fell in love with colour, texture and design when she was very young and started drawing and painting seriously from the age of fourteen – a passion that remains with her to this day. After completing her baccalaureate, she studied Interior Architecture.

Having been with the company since 1995 – 15 years of those as the artistic director – Stéphanie’s enthusiasm for design is as strong as ever. She finds Hartley & Tissier’s capability to manufacture bespoke wool carpets particularly rewarding. There is always the stimulating challenge of creating something new, and clients really appreciate that the product is being made just for them.

julian davey
production director

As a keen artist who drew and painted avidly from a young age, Julian always knew he wanted to pursue art as a career but did not know exactly what form this would take. That was until he took a foundation course at art school and became fascinated by textile design.

Although Julian enjoys almost every facet of the business, he says his biggest thrill and source of pride comes from his continued involvement in the development of traditionally woven wool carpet that, even after working closely with it for 30 years, is essentially beautiful and continues to wow people who see it for the first time.
